PEWS WEBINAR: The Global Housing Emergency & Trans-local Movements for Racial and Economic Justice

Friday, February 27, 8 am HST, 10 am, PST, 1 pm EST, 1 hour event

Housing insecurity has long been a growing problem for cities and communities around the world, and in the United States especially, housing is a leading driver of systemic racial disparities. PEWS scholars have long criticized market-based supply-side housing policy, yet these logics continue to drive national and local housing policy and intensify the housing emergency. Our PEWS-sponsored webinar panel centers on activisms and solutions occurring in and across US cities to support the housing needs of urban residents. Dr. Jackie Smith, professor of Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh and organizer in the Human Rights Cities Alliance will start the panel with an overview of the global housing crisis in global, historical perspective, showing how housing has become a critical front of struggle bringing grassroots communities together to build intersectional movements for social and non-market housing. Jason Spicer, Associate Professor at the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College-CUNY will be speaking on the role of community land trusts and resident-owned communities. Speakers will share lessons and insights about the state of housing advocacy in the U.S. and its potential to advance broader grassroots-global movements for racial and economic justice today. The presentations will be followed by a collective Q & A  and discussion. This event is coordinated to support the scholar-activism that has shaped the PEWS section since its formation.
